Two years is a long time in action cameras. The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro (September 2024, $349 Standard Combo) and the GoPro HERO 13 Black (September 2024, $399.99) each spent about a year as their brand's flagship — until DJI's Osmo Action 6 arrived in November 2025 and GoPro's Mission 1 Pro landed in May 2026 at $699.99. Both 2024 cameras are still sold, neither is discontinued, and the successors above them have quietly turned this pair into 2026's value matchup.
As of September 2026, DJI sells the Action 5 Pro Standard Combo for $319 direct, with street prices running roughly $299–349 — below its $349 launch MSRP. The HERO 13 Black lists at $429.99 and commonly trades around $379 (Amazon and B&H have both been at $379), with an all-time low of $329.99 reached twice this year. In other words: the DJI is the cheaper camera by $60–80 at typical street prices, and the cheaper camera is no longer a compromise on the things that actually end a shoot day — battery, low light or dive depth.

Video and low light
GoPro wins the headline spec: the HERO 13 Black records up to 5.3K60 — plus 720p400 Burst Slo-Mo clips — while the Action 5 Pro tops out at 4K120. But the sensor tells the other half of the story. DJI's 1/1.3-inch 40 MP chip is a size class larger than GoPro's 1/1.9-inch 27.6 MP unit, and the reviewers who shot them side by side kept noticing: WIRED found the Action 5 Pro's footage sharper than the HERO 13 Black's, and roundups consistently call the HERO 13's low light the weakest of the current class behind DJI's Action 4/5 Pro and Insta360's Ace Pro 2. GoPro's sensor is three generations old and its GP2 processor four — the HERO 13's image quality is, by design, a carried-over HERO 12.
Slow motion splits differently. GoPro's Burst Slo-Mo reaches 400 fps at 720p, but those clips run only 5–15 seconds before the camera stops to process; DJI's 1080p240 is a regular recording mode at 8× slow motion, with 4K/2.7K 4× at 120 fps alongside. Battery life
This is DJI's most decisive win. The Action 5 Pro's 1950 mAh battery is good for up to 4 hours of continuous recording by DJI's claim (measured at 1080p/24, RockSteady on, screens off), about 2 hours at 4K/60 in real-world testing, and it keeps shooting at −20 °C — DJI quotes 3.6 hours at that temperature. GoPro's 1900 mAh Enduro battery is officially quoted at roughly 1.5 hours of 5.3K/4K30 and about 2.5 hours of 1080p30. PCMag called the DJI's endurance class-leading and noted it records continuously without overheating; the same battery family carries over to DJI's Osmo Action 6, so spares are everywhere.
Ruggedness, storage and audio
Both are caseless dive cameras, but not to the same depth: DJI rates the Action 5 Pro to 20 m bare — double the HERO 13 Black's 10 m — and 60 m in DJI's IP68 housing. DJI also built in a color temperature sensor that corrects white balance underwater and a pressure gauge for depth and altitude logging. On storage, the Action 5 Pro carries 47 GB of usable built-in flash (64 GB raw) plus microSD to 1 TB; the HERO 13 Black has no internal memory at all — GoPro's manual says you'll need a microSD card, sold separately. Reviewers barely needed arguing into this one. WIRED scored the Action 5 Pro 8/10, calling it "one of the best action cameras I've ever used" and naming battery life industry-leading, low light excellent and footage sharper than the HERO 13 Black's; PCMag gave it 4.5/5 Outstanding for the same battery and stable, overheat-free recording. bestpick.guide crowned it Best Budget Action Cam 2026 at 9.0/10, and with the street price now sitting $50–100 under the Osmo Action 6, the value argument has only improved since. TechRadar still calls the HERO 13 Black the best GoPro you can buy, with PCMag at 4/5, WIRED at 7/10 and The Telegraph at 8/10. GoPro's counters are real but niche: 5.3K60 for maximum reframing headroom, the HB-Series lens system, built-in GPS and the industry's best stabilization. If any of those is the reason you carry an action camera, the HERO 13 Black is the right tool at a now-reasonable price.
