The Switch 2 Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition is testing that pattern in real time — US pre-orders opened September 8, 2026 and sold out within hours, and eBay resellers now ask $700 to $1,000 for a console Nintendo sells for $519.99, weeks before its October 29 launch. So you're really weighing two questions at once: is the special edition worth $20 over the standard Switch 2, and is the scalper premium worth $200 or more over MSRP? Both have short answers, and neither favors paying a reseller.

It costs $519.99 in the US (£434.99 in the UK, ¥62,980 in Japan), launches October 29, 2026, and — this is the part most reseller listings blur — it does not include any game. The Ocarina of Time remake is a separate purchase: $69.99 physical or $59.99 digital, launching November 5, 2026, with the full 27GB game on the cartridge. Nintendo also sells a matching Pro Controller and a themed carry case separately.

Everything under the shell is the standard Switch 2: the same 7.9-inch 1080p LCD with VRR up to 120Hz, the same custom NVIDIA T239 chip with 12GB of RAM, the same 256GB of internal storage, the same 4K docked output, and the same 5,220mAh battery Nintendo rates at 2 to 6.5 hours per charge. The edition is a paint job — a well-executed one, but a paint job.

Switch 2 Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition — $519.99

The case for the Zelda edition is simple: it's the only Switch 2 that looks like a Zelda console, and at Nintendo's $519.99 MSRP it costs just $20 more than the standard model — pocket change against the cost of the console itself. That math only works at MSRP, though. With pre-orders gone in hours and resellers asking nearly double, the current real price of this console is set by scalpers, not by Nintendo. Nintendo says more stock is coming and that it will announce replenishments through the Nintendo Store app, but no date has been given.

Standard Switch 2 — $499.99

The standard Switch 2 launched worldwide on June 5, 2025 at $449.99, and its US price rose to $499.99 on September 1, 2026 — Nintendo cited "changes in market conditions," a hike widely attributed to the AI-driven memory shortage. Unlike the Zelda edition, it is in stock today at most US retailers. Spec for spec, it's the console you'd be buying anyway, with one buying note: expansion storage requires microSD Express cards, which cost several times what standard microSD cards do — worth remembering once the 256GB of internal storage runs low.

Read the table the other way and it tells the same story: every row Nintendo could have made special is identical. The edition's only wins are the two you can see — the colors and the dock — and its biggest loss is that you can't buy it at Nintendo's price right now.

The scalper premium, in numbers

Here is what the resale market looked like within days of pre-orders opening, per Tom's Hardware, Kotaku and NotebookCheck:

• Console only: most eBay listings opened at $700–$900 against the $519.99 MSRP, with the most aggressive listings reaching $985–$1,000 — nearly twice retail.
• Full bundles (console plus Ocarina of Time remake, Pro Controller and case): up to $1,738, against roughly $730 if you bought all four items from Nintendo directly.
• Creative pricing: one listing advertised the console at $730, then added about $555 in delivery fees.
• Outright fraud: at least one listing sold a photo of the console for $400.

eBay has declined to remove the listings — reselling pre-order items doesn't violate its terms of service, per NotebookCheck — so no cleanup is coming from that side.

If history is the guide, patience is the better tool. When Nintendo released the Tears of the Kingdom OLED Switch in 2023, it had the same sold-out opening and the same scalper markup, and it later became readily available at or below MSRP. Nintendo has not called the Zelda edition a limited run, and it has already confirmed more stock through a restock banner in the Nintendo Store app; the UK has confirmed restocks too. Resellers are pricing today's scarcity, not November's.

• Set the Nintendo Store app alert. The store's own banner says restock news will be announced through the app — that's the fastest official signal.
• Watch the major retailers. Pre-orders ran through Best Buy, Walmart, Target, GameStop, Amazon and the Nintendo Store; the store was briefly restocked on September 12 before selling out again, so a restock can appear on any morning.
• Mind the details on any reseller listing. If you do buy from eBay, watch for inflated shipping charges tacked onto a "low" price, and for listings that are photos rather than products — both are documented in this launch.
• Or take the math that already works today. A standard Switch 2 ($499.99) plus the Ocarina of Time remake digital ($59.99) comes to $559.98 — $20 less than the Zelda edition plus the same game, identical hardware, available now.
