Which USB-C battery pack fits your Game Boy Advance?
Short answer: buy the pack made for your shell. In an IPS-ready or laminated shell from the same brand it drops in with no soldering; in an original Nintendo shell every vendor says to trim or modify the battery bay. With an IPS screen and amp, a 1700–1800 mAh pack runs about 11 hours — roughly twice alkaline AAs, and about the same as Eneloop Pro AAs.

Pack finder: which battery for my shell, and how long will it last?
Pick your shell and what's inside your GBA. Packs are sorted from “fits” down, with an estimated runtime per charge.
No pack is vendor-confirmed as a drop-in for this shell — trimming or an unconfirmed fit. For comparison: 2× AA alkaline ≈ 4.9 h, Eneloop Pro ≈ 10.3 h.

What to buy
RetroSix shell: RetroSix CleanJuice — the only pack whose vendor says it fits its own shells with no modifications at all.
FunnyPlaying shell: FunnyPlaying's own battery mod with its USB-C cover, or Retro Modding's pack, which the vendor says fits FunnyPlaying shells without trimming.
Hispeedido laminated shell: Hispeedido's 1800 mAh pack with Hispeedido's USB-C cover, or Robot_Retro's module — Hispeedido lists its cover as compatible with it.
Lowest price: Helder MegaBat1400 at $29.99 — plug-in in IPS-ready shells, about 8.9 hours in an IPS GBA with an amp.
Original shell you won't cut: Skip the pack: Eneloop Pro AAs run about as long (≈10.3 h vs ≈10.8 h for 1700 mAh in an IPS GBA) with no mod.
Battery pack specs side by side
Only what each vendor states. Prices are list prices at the named store on 2026-10-07.
Hand Held Legend measured how much power a GBA draws: 0.28 W stock, 0.495 W with an IPS screen and an audio amp, and 0.9 W with a flash cart on top. Runtime is the battery's energy (mAh × 3.7 V) divided by that draw, minus 15% for losses — the same method the vendor uses. Source

The takeaway most guides miss: in an IPS GBA, a 1700 mAh pack (10.8 h) only beats Eneloop Pro AAs (10.3 h) by half an hour. You buy a USB-C pack for charging in the console and the low-battery warning, not for much more playtime. If you'd rather not mod, Engadget's pick for AA handhelds is Panasonic Eneloop. Source
USB-C battery covers: the part that trips people up
Every pack charges through a USB-C port that sits in the battery bay. Either you open the battery door to plug in, or you fit a cover with a cut-out for the port. Covers are brand-specific:
FunnyPlaying cover ($4.99) — for the FunnyPlaying pack in FunnyPlaying IPS/ITA and laminated shells. Not compatible with CleanJuice.
Hispeedido cover ($2.99) — for the Hispeedido laminated shell; works with Robot_Retro, and with CleanJuice after you trim the tab on its upper left. Not recommended with FunnyPlaying shells or packs.
RetroSix pre-milled cover — hole placed for CleanJuice, but on clearance: RetroSix is discontinuing loose parts, so later you may have to cut your own. Source
Stock cover — the Helder packs and Retro Modding's pack fit with the original door closed; you open it to charge, or cut a hole.
Before you buy: checklist
Identify your shell: original Nintendo, RetroSix IPS-ready, FunnyPlaying, Hispeedido laminated or aluminum.
Pick a pack that the chart marks “Fits” for that shell — mixing brands is where covers and tabs stop lining up.
Decide on the battery door: open it to charge, or buy the USB-C cover made for your pack and shell.
Have a certified USB-C charger and a power-delivery compliant cable.
On an original shell, trim the battery bay a little at a time — never force the pack in.
Do I need to solder to add a USB-C battery to a GBA?
No. Every pack here is a drop-in module that replaces the two AA batteries; RetroSix, FunnyPlaying and Robot_Retro state no soldering. What you may have to do is cut plastic: an original Nintendo shell needs its battery bay trimmed for every pack.
Will a USB-C battery pack fit my original Nintendo GBA shell?
Only after trimming. Every vendor here says the original battery bay must be cut or modified, and the stock cover needs a hole if you want to charge without opening it. If you do not want to cut an original shell, move to an IPS-ready shell or use NiMH AAs instead.
How long does a rechargeable battery last in a GBA with an IPS screen?
Hand Held Legend measures an IPS GBA with an audio amp at 0.495 W. With their method that is about 10.8 hours from a 1700 mAh pack, 11.4 hours from 1800 mAh and 8.9 hours from 1400 mAh — versus about 4.9 hours on two alkaline AAs. A flash cart roughly halves it.
Is a USB-C pack actually better than Eneloop AA batteries?
For runtime, barely: the same measurements give Eneloop Pro AAs about 10.3 hours in an IPS GBA with an amp, against 10.8 hours for a 1700 mAh pack. The pack's advantages are charging inside the console and, on most packs, a low-battery warning. AAs need no mod at all.
Can I play while it charges?
On most packs, yes. FunnyPlaying says its module runs hot when you do and advises against long sessions; Hispeedido says plug-and-play may shorten battery life over time. Helder does not say either way for the MegaBat1400.
Will the GBA power light still warn me when the battery is low?
Depends on the pack. Robot_Retro, FunnyPlaying, Retro Modding and the MegaBat1400 all support a low-battery warning; Hispeedido says the GBA's own low-battery indicator does not work with its pack. RetroSix's CleanJuice page does not say.
Do I need a USB-C battery cover?
Only if you want to charge without opening the battery door. Use the cover made for your pack and shell: FunnyPlaying's cover is not compatible with CleanJuice, Hispeedido's cover needs a tab trimmed for CleanJuice, and RetroSix's pre-milled CleanJuice cover is on clearance as RetroSix drops loose parts.
What charger and cable should I use?
The vendors all warn about lithium cells: use a protected, certified USB-C charger and a power-delivery compliant cable, and never charge a punctured pack. Robot_Retro lists a Nintendo Switch, MacBook Pro, Samsung or Google Pixel USB-C charger as examples, and warns uncertified hardware can push more than 5 V into the console.
Can I put one in a Boxy Pixel aluminum GBA shell?
None of these packs' vendors mention Boxy Pixel shells. Boxy Pixel's own route is a $9 3D-printed holder for its 2000 mAh cell plus a USB-C charge board you buy separately.
Do these packs work in a GBA SP?
No. These are for the original Game Boy Advance (AGB-001) AA bay — Helder labels the MegaBat1400 “GBA only”. The SP already has its own rechargeable battery.
